What’s On – Friday 6th May

Message from Mrs. Castell

Dear Parents

We have had such an active week! The children were absolutely brilliant at the Mini Marathon today and they had a great time with our inspirational athletes, Jessica Tappin and Dan Putnam this afternoon. We wish them every success at the Commonwealth Games, we'll be looking out for them! A very special thank you to all parents, friends and family members who have sponsored the children and generously donated to WISPA, we will let you know the total raised in due course. Mrs Castell will give each child a Mini Marathon medal on Monday. Britvic very kindly provided Fruit Shoots for the children today and a few Year 5 children from Writtle Junior School acted as marshalls. Thank you to Mrs Scott Simons for organising the day.

3 Tees Cricket
Many thanks to Mrs Scott Simons, Miss Wakeling, Mrs Capps and Mrs Wilson who took a group of children to the 3 Tees cricket tournament on Wednesday. We were so impressed with their behaviour and thank you to parents who supported them so well. We are delighted that Dolphins class came first and take part in the finals next Tuesday and Sharks class came fourth out of all the schools who took part. We are so proud!

Our Year Twos have been doing their SATS this week, and their hard work has been balanced with lots of fun activities and active time outdoors. Please note that Reading Mondays on both 9th and 16th May are for EYFS and Year 1 only, as Year Two will be continuing their SATS.

Coming up next week is Turtles' parents lunch on Wednesday 11th May (12.05). Parrots will be on 18th May (12.05). I will meet parents at the gate to the playground and lead them into the hall. Please avoid bringing younger siblings.

To link with the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we are having a theme week of Kings and Queens beginning Monday 23rd May. The Family Learning Time session on Wednesday 25th May will be based on this theme. We are planning events throughout the week including a street party-style lunch for the children on Friday 27th, where we will ask children to wear something red white and blue alongside non uniform. More is being planned!

Best wishes
Helen Castell

We are super proud of our wonderful Year 2s this week! They have worked their socks off in their SATs, as well as enjoying some fabulous activities with our teaching assistants and Mrs Robertson. These included air hockey, Kandinsky-style paintings, a chromatography experiment using Skittles sweets and observing colourful chemical reactions! As promised the whole week has been full of fun and as stress-free as possible.

We must give a huge shout to our awesome cricketers, who represented the school so brilliantly at the 3 Tees competition on Wednesday evening. Congratulations to Dolphins team who won their area heat and will now go through to the area final at Writtle Cricket Club on Tuesday morning. Praise also goes to the Sharks team who came fourth overall, missing third place by the narrowest of margins. All the children showed great skill, teamwork and enthusiasm for the game - they were a credit to the school. Thank you to the parents for transporting the children and giving their vocal and encouraging support, it was greatly appreciated.

Year 1 News

The children have continued to enjoy reading and carrying out activities based around the text ‘The Marvellous Moon Map’. They designed their own moon maps and wrote metaphors which described the moon. They have also started to create a non-fiction mini-book all about the moon which they will continue to work on in future lessons. This linked to our history lessons, where they continued to learn about famous astronauts.

In Maths this week, Year One have continued to practise the skills of multiplication and division with a focus on making equal groups by sharing.

Weather was the theme of Science and Geography. The children discussed seasonal weather and how weather differs in certain countries. They also made weather predictions for the week and kept their own weather diaries.
